I'm trying to understand the best way to set up my email to deal with my mail provider's quota limits and my desire to keep the total size of the emails on my laptop within reasonable bounds. I'm using IMAP with message synchronization so that I have access to my files offline, but over time my mailbox has grown too large - getting close to 20 GB. My nominal work account quota is 5 GB, so I'm annoying my system guy and would like to make him happy by moving most of my mail off his server. I would also like to recover most of that disk space since I've got a limited size SSD drive.
Ideally, I'd like to move most of my current mailbox to an archive stored off my primary laptop (but accessible when I need to dig out an old email), but I can't figure out the best way to do that. To decrease how much mail was stored locally, I tried going to the 'Synchronization and Storage' section and setting the 'Disk Space' settings to 'Synchronize the most recent [6 months]' on the assumption that that would delete a significant chunk of the past five years' worth of email from my local machine (leaving it on the IMAP server), but that didn't seem to change the size of the local mail file (still at 20 GB), so my first question is whether I have to manually delete older messages on my local machine and, if so, if having this setting checked will prevent TB from re-downloading these messages.
Thunderbird was designed to prevent viruses and to stop junk mail. Thunderbird 3 includes tabbed e-mail, new search tools and indexing, smart folders, support for Firefox's Personas, a simplified setup wizard, and robust junk protections that include phishing and spam filters.
If I can get this to work, I'll still have too much mail on my IMAP server. My thought was to find some way to archive those messages off the server. I could download them into Local Folders, but that's still on my laptop, which has limited hard drive space. I'd rather put those emails in an archive on Dropbox in an unsynced folder or on my home NAS, but I use some Local Folder subfolders on a daily basis, so don't want to put the whole Local Folder in Dropbox. Is it possible to have a second Local-Folder-type account on TB that could be placed on an external drive or Dropbox and periodically disconnected from my laptop?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thunderbird is not natively supported by CardDAV, so you must download it first and install SOGo Connector plugin from SOGo Connector for a CardDAV Thunderbird extension.
Make a new remote address book. After installing the plugin, refresh Thunderbird and open an address book. Then, select File/ New/ Remote Address Book.
Pick a name and type the contact folder location:
http://localhost:1080/users/[email protected]/contacts
Change the [email protected] with your actual user email address.
Choose OK and launch synchronization in the Synchronize option. Enter your credentials, log in is Active Directory account name, domain or account, and email address.
If you wish to sync your Google contacts with CardDAV Thunderbird, you must have a Google account, SOGo Connector Thunderbird extension as well as the latest Thunderbird email client latest version. Firstly, you must install the extension in Thunderbird in your local system.
Then, choose Tools > Add-ons in the menu. Tap small settings to search under Extensions and choose Install add-on from file tab. Choose the downloaded extension and continue the installation process.
Open the address book through Tools> Address Book. You can also prefer the Ctrl-Shift-B shortcut. Next, tap File>New>Remote Address Book and add these values on the form:
Name: A custom name that can identify your new remote address book and Google Contacts
URL: https://google.com/m8/carddav/principlas/_uids_/[email protected]/lists/default/. If you wish, you can check the Read-Only box. Then, choose OK to save. Right-click the latest created address book and chose Synchronize on the context menu.
You will be asked to enter your username and password. You must remember to make application-specific password in using a 2-factor authentication in your Gmail account.
SOGo Connector Download and Installation
If you want to synchronize calendar and address book with CardDAV, you can download the SOGo connector in the SOGo website: https://sogo.nu/download.html#/frontends.
Launch Thunderbird and choose Tools > Add-ons. Next, choose gear icon and tap Install Add-on from File. Next, choose downloaded SOGo Connector xpi file for installation and restart the Thunderbird.
In using the SOGo address book, you must have the SOGo Address Book link.
You can now launch Thunderbird:
